Tramshed: Cardiff

A Landmark Restoration and Regeneration Project, providing a Venue for Music, Work, and Culture.

Preserving History, Creating Opportunity

The Tramshed Cardiff project was an ambitious 80,000 sq. ft. redevelopment of a Grade II-listed former tram depot on the western edge of Cardiff city centre. Completed in 2015/16, this visionary scheme transformed a once-derelict industrial site into a thriving mixed-use destination, blending historic architecture with modern functionality.

Supported by the Welsh Government and the local authority, the Tramshed development was designed to create a multi-purpose cultural and business hub, preserving Cardiff’s heritage while driving economic growth.

Originally built in the early 20th century, the tram depot had stood unused for decades before LoftCo embarked on a sensitive yet innovative redevelopment. The project maintained key architectural features, including:

  • Original brick façades and steelwork
  • Expansive industrial-style interiors
  • Restored heritage elements that celebrate Cardiff’s transport history

A Regeneration Success Story

The transformation of Tramshed created:

  • A 1,000+ capacity live music venue, now a key part of Cardiff’s entertainment scene
  • Vibrant bars and restaurants, supporting local businesses and hospitality
  • State-of-the-art tech hubs and offices, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation
  • 31 live/work apartments, integrating residential and commercial space for a true 24/7 community

Since opening, Tramshed has become a flagship example of urban regeneration, demonstrating how historic buildings can be adapted for modern cultural, commercial, and residential use. The project has helped drive investment and footfall to the area, cementing Tramshed as an iconic Cardiff landmark.
